Turkish fire in a lobster town

Doner off the vertical rotisserie, kofte and skewers off the mangal. Run by two Turkish cousins in Bar Harbor.

Watch the rotisserie from the counter

Seasoned beef turns all day on a vertical rotisserie under its own hood, slow-cooking until the edges crisp, then shaved thin for doner sandwiches and bowls. Nothing about it is hidden. That is the point.

“I had the donor plate and it was quite delicious. I love that you can see the rotisseries and know they are preparing the meats the correct way.”

Red & green

Two house sauces, on every doner sandwich and bowl.

AI-generated concept of a meze spread with hummus, carrot and red-cabbage tarator, sigara boregi, and pita.

Meze, then the fire pit

The image shows a meze concept, not the yard. Separately, the cousins added a bigger bar, blue-painted walls, picnic tables and a fire pit; draft beer, wine and Turkish tea round out a cool Bar Harbor evening.

“The service was so good and they even set up the fire pit for us to stay warm while eating in the evening.”

Two cousins, more like brothers

Yasin Emre Ozkose and Ahmet Timocin grew up side by side in Turkey; their moms are sisters. Before opening a place of their own, they cooked four straight seasons at Cafe This Way, the Bar Harbor breakfast staple, and they live on the island year-round. The menu is built on cherished family recipes, from homemade hummus to hand-formed kofte.

“the Kofte was probably the best I've ever had. The various yogurts were ALL delicious as was the chicken kabob (so soft!) and the Doner was great.”

“We started with the carrot tarator, a yogurt-and-carrot spread served with warm pide bread. Whatever else was in it, it was outstanding.”
