The password is finding the door.

Behind an unmarked door in the back of a Main Street gift shop: 6-8 seats, every pour made in Maine.

The Maine Store is easy to find. The bar inside it is not.

Find.

Start at The Maine Store, 152 Main St, across from the Village Green. Browse the shelves like anyone else, then head for the back corner. Look for a round sign hung on rope, a white line-art lobster, and a door nobody bothered to mark.

the password is simply to open the door.

Enter.

Rope-wrapped beams. Fishing nets on barn-red walls. Weathered barnwood shelves stacked with bottles that follow one rule: if it is not made in Maine, it is not poured here. Every craft beer, every wine, every spirit, down to the root beer in the mixers.

Sit.

There are 6 to 8 seats at the glossy dark-wood bar, under warm dome lamps. Darrin will find out what you like and take it from there.

The pours

Drinks only, despite the name. Every bottle on the shelf comes from a Maine brewery, winery, or distillery.

“Just be careful with the Root Beer Bourbon cocktails, they are dangerously good…”

Darrin pours. His wife runs the shop.

The Rebel Lobster is a husband-and-wife operation: Darrin behind the bar, his wife running The Maine Store out front. He is the storyteller, the local-recommendation machine, and the reason a bar this small has music trivia and karaoke nights.

The wall behind him is covered in framed photos of past patrons, and guests leave a sign-off on the chalkboard before they go.

“Darren is the quintessential host, explaining and recommending wines, brews and spirits native to the area. In fact, they ONLY offer products native to the area which makes it all the more unique.”
