The Rebel Lobster speakeasy

Bar Harbor’s hidden all-Maine speakeasy

The password is finding the door.

You end up on the wall.

Dozens of small framed photos of past patrons hang behind the bar, and the chalkboard collects sign-offs from everyone else. Here is how guests talk about the place.

“The pancake shot was delicious and comes with a fun surprise.”

“Just be careful with the Root Beer Bourbon cocktails, they are dangerously good…”

“BY far, my favorite establishment in Bar Harbor, and my wife and I, wouldn't look back.”

Stay for a pour or two. You might end up in a frame yourself.

All six to eight seats of it.

The bartender is the show.

Darrin tends the bar himself: pouring Maine whiskeys with the story behind them, steering first-timers to the right glass, and handing out local recommendations all night.

Some nights it is music trivia and his guessing game. Some nights it is karaoke. And if nothing on the shelf calls to you, tell him what you like and he will mix an off-menu concoction around it.

His wife owns and runs The Maine Store out front. That is why the bar keeps shop hours, and why you browse Maine-made goods on your way to a Maine-only bar.

“Darrin was very funny and the drinks were fantastic! Definitely hoping to visit again in the future.”

Every pour is Maine-made.

Drinks only, and all of it Maine: every craft beer, wine, spirit, and cocktail ingredient on the shelf comes from this state. Nothing from away.

“Darren is the quintessential host, explaining and recommending wines, brews and spirits native to the area. In fact, they ONLY offer products native to the area which makes it all the more unique.”

After a decade on Mt. Desert Street, the store and its speakeasy moved up to Main Street and reopened for the 2025 season.
