Indulgences

Warm baked things under cold scooped things.

  • Pastor Benson's Brownie Temptation

Choice of ice cream and the allure of a warm 'Heaven'-baked brownie with hot fudge, whipped cream, chocolate sprinkles and the persuasive cherry

  • Preacher Patterson's Whoopie in Paradise

Choice of ice cream and the bliss of a 'Heaven' whoopie pie, hot fudge, whipped cream, rainbow sprinkles and the coveted cherry

  • Parson Rumill's Cookie Comfort

Choice of ice cream and the serenity of a warm 'Heaven'-baked chocolate chip cookie with hot fudge, whipped cream, cookie dust and the tranquil cherry

Two of these honor real Bar Harbor clergy: Rob Benson of the Bar Harbor Congregational Church and Preacher Patterson of River Church.

The brownies, cookies, blueberry pies and whoopie pies (traditional, Maine blueberry and pumpkin spice) all come out of the shop's own ovens. The menu calls that case A Parish of Pastries.

Grails of Goodness

Frappes, sodas and floats, poured tall.

  • Friar's Frappe

Some call it a 'shake' - a parochial blending of their special milk base and your choice of hard ice cream, 22 oz; add malt

  • Sister Sarina's Old Fashioned Ice Cream Soda

Flavor syrup stirred with cream and soda water, hard ice cream added until the 22 oz cup bubbles over

  • Float of Faith

Your choice of ice cream adrift in your choice of soda - local Old Soaker Root Beer is 'The Orthodox Choice'

  • Manna From Maine

Vanilla soft serve in a parfait of semi-frozen Maine blueberries and hot fudge, 16 oz

The church of ice cream on Dreamwood Hill

Bob Wisecarver worked in insurance around Boston; his wife's career was in education. After 27-plus years of vacationing in Bar Harbor, the couple bought the Dreamwood Hill building at 369 Rt. 3 in 2005 and remodeled it over several years with their daughter and local carpenter Brian Shaw.

Udder Heaven opened in 2008 scooping a regional distributor's premium ice cream. In 2012 the shop switched to making its own, and today the case runs hard ice cream, soft serve, frozen yogurt, sherbet, sorbet, Italian ice and non-dairy desserts (non-dairy is served in cups).

The hard ice cream mix is 14% butterfat, made with Maine milk from farms without added growth hormones and pasteurized for a short shelf life to keep it fresh. The chief ice cream maker trained through programs at Cornell, Penn State, Wisconsin, Florida, Ice Cream University and Pre-Gel of America, and the shop belongs to the North American Ice Cream Association.

It is a first job for a lot of local kids, and the shop gives back through the Bar Harbor Backpack Program, Garden Club scholarships and scholarships for its own employees.
